Hi Little Plotters and families,

As we move into Ostara it's so good to see all the trees sprouting new leaves and the amazing flowers - daffodils and where I live the bluebells have also started.

Here is my guide to our last Imbolc activity - planting some broad beans. Its an easy thing to do and exciting to watch them sprout and grow.

Frida’s guide to sowing broad bean seeds

If you'd like to grow your beans in a container like me, you'll need a pot at least 30cm deep and 30-40cm wide - so a big one. You'll also need some soil or potting compost, and the beans that are included in your Little Plotters kit. (You can start your seeds off in a smaller pot, or plant them straight into the ground if you want, but watch out for slugs and snails who will have baby plants for their dinner).
Fill your pot with soil or compost, leaving a good 3cm at the top so that when you water it doesn't go over the sides of the pot. (If you are using compost, choose a multi purpose, peat free type).
Grab your seeds. This step is very important! If you have a Little Plotters pack, you should find two beans in an envelope.
Plant the beans 15-20cm apart and about 5cm deep - that's about the size of your finger when you push it into the soil. Cover again with soil and give them a drink but don't make the soil soggy.
If you are using a container, put it somewhere a bit sheltered where it will get the sunshine. When the plants get to 20-30cm tall (fingers crossed) they will need a small cane or stick to hang onto. Carefully tie them to it with some string or twine. Before they fruit you will get some pretty white and black flowers which the bees love. Keep picking the pods and they will keep growing.
