Earthworks – an allotment group for bereaved men
This project is managed and run by the Martlets Hospice and is funded by Hospice UK. It provides a weekly space for bereaved men to get together and grow and harvest an abundance of veg, flowers and fruit.
A Martlets counsellor provides a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work and the morning begins with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Previous gardening experience is not required and you’re free to take on whichever jobs interest you, be it lighter work in the greenhouse or getting stuck into digging. Sharing experiences of loss while working with the natural cycle of life, through the seasons, can be a positive and healing experience.
“Since my loss, life has been chaotic and stressful and this place gives me something to look forward to that is calm.” - Earthworks participant
As of July 2019 this project has now ended, but plans are in place for it to continue on a different plot.
